Arts programs at our public schools teach students to see and understand the world around them, and interpret that understanding through their own unique lens. Students develop visually literate and aesthetically sensitive skills.
Teaching and learning is not confined to the four walls of a classroom and the structure of a bell schedule. With the right tools, supports and professional practice, teachers will engage more students in blended learning environments and prepare them for a future of college, career and community readiness.
Hawaii Common Core Standards define the knowledge and skills students need to succeed in college and careers when they graduate. They align with college and workforce expectations, are clear and consistent, include rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order skills, are evidence-based, and are informed by standards in top-performing countries.
Hawai’i is the only state in the United States that has designated a native language, Hawaiian, as one of its two official state languages. In 1987, in light of the Hawai’i State Constitution mandate to promote the study of Hawaiian culture, language and history, the Department of Education established the Hawaiian Studies Program and the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program, Ka Papahana Kaiapuni Hawai’i.
STEM education integrates the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by using scientific inquiry and engineering design as unifying processes. STEM emphasizes innovation and the development of problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills. Emphasizing arts creates engaging new pathways for learning.
